  1. Hello, I am trying to use some useful EI materials I have made in the past, in other programs. In my opinion Maya is sorely lacking in material creation that software like aFractal and NX has.  Before these are gone forever, I would like to make permanent textures out of them. Someone had a post on how to do it but I can't find it. I think it had to do with a non-reflective plane facing the camera but I am fuzzy on how the lighting works since it has to be so even.  Thanks to anyone that help.  -Derryl

  2. We can't install on the new Mac OS so we are trying to install on Win 10 with bootcamp.  I downloaded the win version of 9.1, the 4 drivers and the drivers for the dongle but when I open EIAS and put in the unlock code it just quits.  Not sure what step I could have missed.  Thanks.

  3. Is there a way to have the perspective camera render animation in Orthographic view? An issue I run into is that I will have models that are exactly the same from say the front view but when when rendered in the Camera's perspective view you can see the differences between the two.

If I render from Front view the result is fine. But I don't see a way to animate from Front, Side or Top. I can do one frame at a time but that is tedious. Thanks. -Derryl

  4. I have many objects that need to turn off and on throughout the animation. If look at the object in Frame view in the Project window I see the Visibility state of Off or On but I can only change one at a time even if I select many columns.

Is there a way to change many frames at one time? Thanks. -Derryl

  5. Anyone have a recipe for a beer foam type of material? Not quite getting it right. Using the fractal foam now but the rounded bubbles are the issue.

It would be great if there was some type of depository for materials here. I know there has been talk of it but I don't think that it is going to happen. Wouldn't mind donating some space and a small site for this if enough are interested.

  6. Thanks Alonzo, just to clarify, when you say the Link Window I assume you mean the Joint Editor, correct? And Link Alignment Position?

Wow, ok I just tried it and it works. Oddly 'Link Alignment Position' is usually already on Middle, but if you click on it again, it re-centers the centroid.  How the hell did you figure that out?

Note: This changes the Position and Parental Offset numbers into something that I am not sure is usable but it definitely solves the problem at hand!, Thanks!  -Derryl

  7. I believe that is how I was doing exporting it. But that was just an example, the question was more about how to get the objects world coordinates back after parking.  I have found a workaround of creating a sphere and giving it a position constraint and copying the position in the Project window/Frame view. Awkward but works.

  8. Had a lot of fun creating this self-promo to send out as a postcard. Used Mrs Bebel for the type (love this plug-in), Contortionist for the arms, Bullet to explode the glass which I baked and then repositioned afterward. Modeled in FormZ. Animator is so easy to work with in a fluid way. You can throw 10 million polys at it and it doesn't complain. -Derryl

  9. Hi, does anyone know if there is a way to reset an object's centroid position to where it is in world coordinates? It's easy to park an object and then its centroid is 0,0,0 (World), but if you every need to rotate it a small amount, it rotates around the center of the project which is useless.

An example would be, say I export out frame of an asteroid field simulation with 150 objects created with Bullet. Then I reimport it into a project. Every object's centroid is at the World 0,0,0. To spin anything on its own axis would require going to Joint Editor, finding the centroid and dragging it to the center of the object in each of the XY, XZ,YZ views. Pretty tedious for projects with many objects. Is there an easier way to do this? Or at least a better method of doing things like this? Thanks.  -Derryl

  10. Chip, Rhinoceros is a primarily a free form NURBS surface modeler. One popular thing about it is that it is modular and companies write some serious plugins for it. If I had to say what it was best for it would probably be industrial design.

You can't just drag objects to another layer but you can select the object and change the layer via a pulldown and I like that it is more descriptive than Maya.  I can't say for sure if the booleans are better than Modeler as I haven't used it seriously for years and just keep it in Parallels/Snow Leopard to update older files. I too would gladly pay for an updated Modeler but at this point it seems very unlikely. You should download Rhino, I think the demo is 90 days.  There are some great tutorials on DigitalTutors and YouTube. I would be interested to see your take on it. -Derryl
